The Long Way Around

Here’s another example of how wired (weird) the world we live in. A cousin who lives in Canada leaves you a message on Facebook and Friendster and also sends you an email so that you can tell your mom that a certain uncle has passed away. Apparently, your mom forgot to tell a few people that she had a new phone number that she got with that new prepaid phone and that you’re actually one of those people that she forgot to tell. You end up calling your brother who tells you that your mom has new phone number and you tell him to tell her the news.

Forgive me if I seem callous about my uncle’s passing. It’s just that it’s been expected for quite a while. He had a stroke over fifteen years ago and has never recovered. About fifty percent of his body was paralysed. A second stroke a few years after the first then relegated him to a wheel chair and his speech became nearly unintelligible. You could see the frustration in his eyes whenever he tried to communicate. His health had been on a steady decline – in and out of hospital on various infections and complications. I think he deserves the break from all that. Still, it’s sad to lose someone in the family.

Something To Do

Dang! It’s been so long since I’ve last written that I seem to have forgotten how. It’s that forced vacation from cyberspace. Anyway, what I want to write about is how I’m enjoying my new job. Basically, what I’ve been doing for the past three weeks is making magic with numbers and designing powerpoint slides. Yep, designing. Basically, I’m helping my boss design the contents so that it’s graphical instead of the usual boring text that you see in most powerpoint presentations. My boss seems to have an obsession for charts yet when I look at the slides they make sense. It’s not a completely new way of thinking but I’m getting reacquainted with it.

He seems happy that I am able to grasp the concepts that he wants to show through the charts and execute the charts accordingly. I gathered the person who had the role before me was let go after only two weeks because she couldn’t grasp my boss’ way of thinking. It’s kind of scary but I’m not even considering the possibility that I might be let go.

My boss seems to be competent in his role. It’s quite encouraging that he spoke with me about his plans and where I fit in them. It’s been quite a while since I felt like I was not just a drone filing to work every day doing my shtick but an actual valued contributor. Of course, the downside to this is that it means I can’t slack off anymore and it’s time to actually time for me to get down to some real work. Oh well, they do say that you should be careful what you wish for and I did wish for a challenging job so who am I to complain.

I'm Back!

Huzzah! I finally have internet! After moving to a new apartment (actually, it’s old; I’m the one who’s new in it) five weeks ago, I’m back in cyberspace. I actually went on withdrawal symptoms and went online using my 3G phone and ended up with a massive phone bill. Anyway, I just wanted to re-establish my link to cyberspace and I’m off to do something absolutely geeky. Again, huzzah!
